Road Trip
Today is the first day on the road. Slight change of plans. I left a few days earlier without my co pilot Cindy. I need to be in Tulsa earlier to get prepared for the party I’m doing for my friend Shannon there on Saturday. (Pictures of the party to come)
Cindy will join me on Friday. The other reason for my earlier departure without Cindy is we did not want to leave our pups any longer than we already are. This of course is the only downside of the road trip. We miss our baby’s. Next year they will make the trip with us for the entire summer with the new food truck.
Day 1- Amarillo TX
I left at 6:00 am. This is the long part of the journey. I’m driving to Amarillo which is about 800 miles. Long drive. I will miss my co pilot. It was a long uneventful drive for the most part.
I choose to listen to my play list for the entire ride. No radio. Completely cut off from the 24 hour news cycle. It was 14 hours of bliss………..lol lol
I’ve done this drive cross country numerous times over the years, and every time of doing it I can’t help but think about how vast our country is. I forget. But I drove miles today where you basically don’t see anything but wide open land. It’s actually quite beautiful…….but I digress.
I drove through Arizona, New Mexico (ya, they are that big!) and ended up in Amarillo, Texas I was exhausted, but knew I needed to stop by the Cadillac Ranch for a few photo’s. I forgot my paint can. You can bring your own paint can and paint on any or all the cars pretty much whatever you want. The cars are always changing, evolving so to speak.
A little background
Cadillac Ranch is a public art installation and sculpture in Amarillo, Texas. It was created in 1974. Standing along Route 66 west of Amarillo, the Cadillac Ranch was invented and built by a group of art-hippies imported from San Francisco. They called themselves The Ant Farm, and their silent partner was Amarillo billionaire Stanley Marsh 3. He wanted a piece of public art that would baffle the locals, and the hippies came up with a tribute to the evolution of the Cadillac tail fin.
The installation consists of what were (when originally installed during 1974) either older running used or junk Cadillac automobiles, representing a number of evolutions of the car line from 1949 to 1963, half-buried nose-first in the ground, at an angle purportedly corresponding to that of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.
It’s really something to see those cadillacs half buried and so colorful in the middle of the desert. If you do go, be sure to bring your own spray paint!
I decided no 72 oz steak at The Big Texan Steak Ranch this trip. No way I could handle that. Did you know they are famous for the Big Texan 72oz Steak Challenge? Entire meal must be completed in one hour. If you win, your meal is free, you get a certificate of completion and are on their online “Wall of Fame” Maybe on my return trip?? LOL
Back at the hotel
After stoping at the Cadillac Ranch, when back to the hotel for some well needed sleep.
Speaking of hotels….If you haven’t heard of the app HotelTonight you need to download it if you are taking a road trip. The app allows you to find last minute deals/ discounted hotel deals. Cindy has it on her phone. When I got about 45 minutes outside of Amarillo, I called and asked her to make a reservation. Scored Hilton Garden Inn at a great price! Cindy said they are having a promo going on. If you use code:CITHOMAS1 when you book a room you will get $25 off your stay!
So that was day 1. Tomorrow driving to Tulsa.
I love your creativity. The interesting places you visit and I feel like Im on this trip too. Thank you for being you.
Thank you very much Annette! I appreciate the company on the journey. Check out my blog on the food truck. You’ll be seeing it around Tucson in the fall!
